A Contrast

An interesting contrast can be seen when comparing the Victorian Age and Today.

For the most part, those who lived during the Victorian Age were fascinated with death. Many would go so far as to display the skulls of their dead loved ones in prominent places to remind them of their own mortality.

Sex however was never spoken of in public.

As we all know, sex is commonplace in the language of today. You cannot turn on your television, radio, or computer without being bombarded with overtly sexually explicit content. Sex dominates our thoughts and conversations.

However, we go to great lengths to avoid even saying the words death, dead, or died. Euphemisms such as, “kick the bucket” are employed by many in an attempt to laugh the reality of death away. Others favor a more serious approach and refer to death as, “passing away.”

Whichever approach one chooses to take the motive is the same. We all want to lessen the reality and totality of death.

Now why is this… why does sex dominate our conversations and thoughts and not death?

It is because sex makes us feel alive unlike anything else in the world. It is the process for bringing new life into the world.

Why do we fear death? We fear death because death is unnatural. Humanity was never designed to die. Death is the great sign of the judgment of God. Death spoils this world...

But it has been defeated!

We need not fear it any more; instead we can have hope as we face the future. And that hope is not based on mere wishful thinking; it is firmly rooted in an historical event: the first Easter Day - the day death died!

This Sunday won’t you consider attending services at Rose City Baptist Church. In doing so you will have the opportunity to hear the full story of Jesus. And you will learn what significance the death and resurrection of Jesus has on your life.

“And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.” – Mark 16:6
